“How beautiful upon the mountain, are the steps of those who walk in peace. ”
song by Tom Paxton based on Isaiah 52:7
“The next Buddha will not take the form of an individual.
The next Buddha will take the form of a community;
a community practicing understanding and loving kindness,
a community practicing mindful living.
This may be the most important thing we can do
for the survival of the Earth.”
Thich Nhat Hanh
Mindful living protects us and helps us go in the direction of peace.
With the support of friends in the practice, peace has a chance.”
Thich Nhat Hanh
I hope you are well and happy and have weathered the storm in fine fashion. Here it was a relatively gentle storm…about a foot of snow and no outages! Just an opportunity to stop and be quiet… what a joy!
Since this coming Sunday is the 5th Sunday of the month, there will not be a Clear Heart Gathering that evening….There will however be a gathering at our home at 2 PM on Sunday for those who are interested in being a part of the Care Taking Committee to help strengthen our community. I offered a doodle poll to come to the best time for the most people to participate. Eleven folks responded as being able to be with us. If there are those of you who would like to participate, but did not respond to the poll, please feel free to join us.
In preparation for our gathering, I am including a very brief (8 question) survey for the whole Sangha to get a sense of what is working for folks and suggestions for strengthening our Sangha. I hope that you will take a few moments to complete and return it. That will be a big help for us. Thank you, thank you!!!!
I am including a link to a beautiful interview bell hooks did with Thay about the importance of Sangha for the magazine, “The Lion’s Roar”…Enjoy!!!

This Buddhist Monk Is An Unsung Hero In The World’s Climate Fight
Here is a link to a wonderfully inspiring article about how Thay influenced Christiana Figueres, a UN diplomat from Costa Rica, who organized the world climate summit in Paris.
I was especially moved that she took the time to acknowledge the role Thay played in her life and her activism and to publicly give him credit.
We sometimes like to think that all of the accomplishments we have made are because of us.
When we can recognize that we are merely the tip of a very large iceberg…when we can look deeply to understand that countless individuals and causes and conditions were necessary for any success we have had….we experience our state of interbeing, the freedom of genuine humility, and the pure joy of gratitude. It is wonderful to know that Christiana Figueres has done that and is in the position she is in.
